In the Pursiut of… Finding my Calling

Y’all, I found my calling in life! How many people can truly say that? I always enjoy a good TED Talk, but this one in particular struck a cord.  In his new book, Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work, Dave Isay shares 7 takeaways for finding your calling, and I feel the need to share these profound insights with you.

  1. Your calling must possess three things: you must be good at it, you need to feel appreciated, and you need to believe that what you are doing is helping others.
    • This part is kind of obvious. I mean, if you think about, this is the definition of a nurse practitioner.
  2. Your calling often comes out of difficult experiences.
    • I have had countless set backs and people telling me that I wasn’t good enough for as long as I can remember. But I finally came to the point where I knew what I wanted and was capable of achieving, and I’ll be dammed if someone tries to tell me otherwise!
  3. Your calling often takes courage and ruffles feathers. A calling often starts when you are taking a stand against the status quo that simply isn’t acceptable, and then dedicating your work to change it.
    •  A lot of nursing stems from a culture of submissiveness and lower academic standards, and anyone that knows me knows that I am stubborn as hell. Part of this calling is that I want to raise the standards for nursing education and independent practice through several outlets that I will speak of in another post.
  4. Others often nudge you towards your calling.
    • Though I previously mentioned that many people told me I would never make it, there were also several people who nudged me along the way: coworkers, preceptors, professors in nursing school, my friends, and most importantly, my family.
  5. What comes after identifying you calling is what really matters.

  6. Age is just a number. Your calling can arrive at any stage in life.
    • This doesn’t necessarily apply to me, but some of you may appreciate this.
  7. Your calling doesn’t always come with a big paycheck.
    • Know your worth, but also be willing to take a pay cut to pursue your dreams. Undeserved populations are the people  I love to help the most. Though the pay isn’t as great as working in a hospital, I have weekends and holidays off, and everything I do is helping someone in need. And that my friend, is priceless.


Have y’all ever heard of asparagus pee? The nose has many different receptors which enable us to smell different scents. Every time you eat asparagus, your pee smells, but only certain people have the genetic mutation to be able to smell it.

In the Pursuit of… Embracing my Inner Badass

This week has been all about finding what truly makes me happy and winning myself over again. As a perpetual student since I was 4 years old, I do not remember ever taking time away from school to work on myself and pursue my passions. Fast forward to the present where I am, for the first time in my life, without the demands and academic rigor of exams, papers, and scholarly presentations… it’s time to truly enjoy life DOING THE THINGS I LOVE.

I sat down this past week and made a list of everything I felt passionate about, and to my surprise, it was a pretty long list! Instead of mulling over it for hours, I chose to focus on 3 things that I could change right now in my life (this blog, finally starting the podcast I have said I wanted to work on for years, and taking time to bake again).

While ideas of my podcast are in the works, and yes, I will share it with everyone once it’s up and running, what I can share are some simple, yet delicious recipes that I found for the holidays (see below). Baking has always had a calming effect on my psyche. I love how it takes my mind away from everything except the task at hand.

Who runs the world? GIRLS! A new study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine shows that  female physicians “have a more patient- centered communication style, are more encouraging and reassuring, and have longer visits than male physicians.” The research further concludes that patients are also less likely to die if they are treated by a female physician.

In the Pursuit of… Happiness

The headline says it all. Today is the day that I begin sharing my pursuit of happiness in this journey called life. As I sit in a coffee shop WITH OTHER PEOPLE AROUND (something I would be hesitant to do beforehand), I think about how far I have come in the last few months.

Around July of this year, I was at the lowest part of my life. BUT I sit here today after waking up with a smile on my face and excited about finally starting this blog. As I mentioned in my ABOUT section, I have spent the last year trying to find out who I am again as I start a new career as a nurse practitioner.

July was a pivotal moment for me because I had started my last semester as a nurse practitioner student, and I was standing there telling my patients that they needed to seek psychiatric care for their mental issues, while I was doing the direct opposite. TALK ABOUT HYPOCRISY. How could I be telling others how to improve their lives when I wasn’t trying myself?

I found a psychologist and began going to weekly sessions. I found that it incredibly helpful to talk about my problems with an unbiased professional. I soon discovered the missing link towards my own happiness. I AM ACTUALLY A SOCIAL PERSON. WHO KNEW? It’s a little ironic that someone with social anxiety secretly likes to be around people. She started me on a journey to find adult friends in a city where I felt so alone.

It started off small. I joined a group called Meet Up, and I made a connection with another nurse practitioner here in the city. It may seem small, but that was a huge step for me. That final push to start a real change in my life began last night when I discovered a self help book called You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. The principle is that YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP in order to change. And dammit, I’m ready to start loving life again.

I plan on updating this blog at least once a week with the steps I am taking to change my life. This week, I signed up for a meet up to practice my Spanish (and meet new people) and called a friend to have dinner next week. What about you? What are you doing this week to help yourself?


This week the VA announced that nurse practitioners can practice independently within the system! This is a huge and groundbreaking step towards more independence for nurse practitioners in this country, and I cannot wait to read the studies to come from this decision.
